John was predeceased by his parents Carl and Margaret Hartz, brother Carl Hartz Jr. and sister Charlyne Hartz.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Dorothy also known as "Dottie", and his children: John (Shelly) Hartz, David (Lorrie) Hartz, and Jennifer Hartz Olick. Grandchildren include Steven Olick, Spencer (Carly) Hartz, Charlyne (Mitchell) Olick, Jacob Hartz, and Gram Hartz; sisters: Rosemarie Longbine, Margaret Mary Brassie, Barbara Ann Owad and brother Rick as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was an avid sportsman and through the years belonged to several trap and skeet clubs in the NY area. He was a car enthusiast who built and restored vehicles of his own and those of his friends and children. John enjoyed woodworking, designing and building furniture as keepsakes for his children and grandchildren.
He served proudly in the U.S. Navy Seabees and was a retiree from Local 669 Sprinkler Fitters Union. John was the "pig with the bricks" who was always prepared and would always lend a hand to anyone who came to his door. His talents were far too many to mention.
He leaves many dear friends both in Florida and New York and some that have been in his life since childhood. Wonderful friends and neighbors have stepped up more often to help when he needed that extra hand. Neighbors Pete and Kelli Marciano were like family to him, with whom he enjoyed sitting in the garage and talking with for hours.
Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in New York. Date and time will be determined at a later date.
Contributions can be made to Wounded Warriors or Tunnel to Towers in John's name, or just by honoring him by taking a moment and remembering your memories of a very special man.
