Dr. Mary Patt Kennedy, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on July 8, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the cherished daughter of William and Peggy Atkins, who preceded her in death.
Mary Patt shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, John. Together, they built a loving family that was always her greatest joy. Her children survive her: Jason Kennedy (Jenny), Jonathan Kennedy (Julia), and Justin Kennedy (Susan); her brother, Bill Atkins of McHenry; and her nephew, Drew D‘Arcy (Karen). She is also survived by nine adoring grandchildren, four nieces and nephews, and a huge extended family.
A lifelong educator, Mary Patt dedicated 33 years to the students and families of Volusia County. She was the founding principal of Indian River Elementary in Edgewater and finished her career as an area superintendent, supervising schools from South Daytona to Oak Hill. She retired from Volusia County Schools in 2010 but continued to share her knowledge by teaching graduate programs at Stetson University and UCF. She will be remembered as a gifted advocate for education.
To her friends and family, however, Mary Patt was even more. A woman of boundless determination, kindness, wisdom, and grace. She lived with unwavering character and integrity, setting an example that will guide her family for generations. She was “wise counsel” and the one turned to for guidance and unconditional love.
Mary Patt was a testament to lifelong learning, as she continued to take French and piano lessons for the last six years.
She was affectionately known in the family as the “little fashionista” for her unique collection of size 4 shoes.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives she touched.
A Mass will be held on October 21, at 10:00 am, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Smyrna Beach. A celebration of life will follow in the social hall.
