William F. Messner (Bill), 88, died on May 23, 2018. Bill was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area. A former resident of South Park, PA Bill and his wife, Lorraine, enjoyed spending winters in Daytona Beach. After Lorraine’s death on Dec. 19, 2000, he became a permanent resident of Florida. Bill had been proud to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He retired from Conrail (formerly Pennsylvania Railroad) after 42 years of service as a signalman, electronic specialist, and assistant engineer. Bill was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion and enjoyed doing volunteer work after his retirement. He was active with the Literacy Council for many years, where he taught English to the Mexican farm workers in Florida. He also tutored reading to children in elementary school, and taught CDC classes to 7th graders at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, where he was a faithful member. Bill had also been certified in caregiving and took care of several elderly gentlemen while in Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Messner; son, Keith (Kerry) Messner; three grandchildren, Kayla, Kristy, and Kacey; along with stepdaughters, Sherry Tidwell, Donna Bradford, and Cindy Pack; 8 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Pittsburgh, PA with inurnment at Jefferson Memorial Park.
