This week we lost a great one. Al Passy was someone who dedicated his life to his family, friends, and his beloved NY Yankees. His “Yankee Room” is a mini museum of artifacts, signed balls, signs, and pictures of Yankees from every era, including his idol Mickey Mantle. As a teacher, guidance counselor, and summer camp director for a camp for kids with diabetes and another for kids with cancer, he spent countless hours, days, and years making sure that today’s kids have a smile and a bright future. He was a relentless fundraiser and volunteer-hunter to help with these camps. Al was the president of his homeowner’s association in Freehold, NJ for what seemed like 150 years. He was always on call for important matters from snow removal to someone breaking rules by painting their door eggshell instead of ivory. His love of the Yankees and summer camps was only outdone by his love of napping and bargain hunting. Nobody hated shopping more than Al, but nobody got better deals than Al.
Al was a creative driver (sidewalks are paved, so you can drive on them…) and was challenged with being able to fix the various things he would break.
He is survived by his love of 60+ years, Esther, who “put up with his $@” since they were teenagers, sisters Marlene (Sheldon) and Barbara, daughter Amy (David) and son Mark (Elizabeth), and his favorite people - his grandkids Samantha and Matthew. He would do anything for them and loved spending time with them from day 1, from going to the mall to ride the carousel to spending Sundays watching the Giants lose together.
The funeral will be this Sunday at Beth El Memorial Park in Ft Pierce, FL (noon, Giants kickoff 1pm), followed by Shiva at the Passy house in Port St Lucie (12-4pm, 6-9pm) through Wednesday 11/27, and then at Amy’s house in Manalapan, NJ on Sunday Dec 1 (12-5pm, 6:30-8:30pm).
You can help honor Al’s legacy by making a donation to CAMP QUALITY NJ. (campqualityusa.org - click DONATE at the top then choose CAMP QUALITY NEW JERSEY).
We find comfort knowing how many lives Al touched throughout his entire life. He will be missed.
