Delmina Veronica DeLisser (née Palmer), a woman of profound resilience, wisdom, and boundless love, has passed away peacefully at the age of 92. Born in the District of Cross Roads in the Parish of Saint Andrew, Jamaica, to Mabel Graham and Marquis Palmer, Delmina was the youngest of six children. She spent her formative years navigating life between Manchester and Kingston, developing a beautiful "sharing nature" that would become the hallmark of her life.
In her early twenties, Delmina embarked on a courageous journey, migrating from Jamaica to England. It was aboard that very ship that she met the love of her life, Owen DeLisser. Their shipboard romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and the two were united in marriage on January 7, 1956, in London. They shared 38 devoted years together, building a family and a legacy.
Delmina was the proud and fiercely loving mother of five children: Michael, Vincent, Paul, Denis, and Cheryl. Always industrious and creative, she graduated from the Waterman School of Hairdressing in 1973 and enjoyed working as an independent hairstylist during her years in England. In the late 1970s, ever the pioneer, Delmina and Owen crossed the Atlantic once more to relocate to the United States. They settled in Maryland with their young daughter, Cheryl, while her four adult sons remained in England, expanding the family’s roots across continents.
A natural caregiver with a giving heart, Delmina later dedicated 22 years of her life working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Maryland. She was a woman who believed deeply in the dignity of hard work and independence. "Your job is your best friend," she would wisely advise her loved ones as a no-nonsense reminder to always protect one's ability to take care of oneself and one's household. To those who knew her, she was a true peacemaker: strong, hard-working, kind, and extraordinarily thoughtful.
Delmina also knew how to savor the joys of life. She was a vibrant soul who loved music and dancing just as much as she cherished the quiet comforts of reading or a warm cup of tea. A sharp and engaged mind, she relished talking politics and never missed her favorite soap operas. Her adventurous spirit also took her around the world, with cherished travels to Jamaica, England, Canada, Paris, and throughout the United States. Many of these trips took her to see family and friends and if she could not make it to see her loved ones in person, she made sure to write or call to let you know she cared.
Delmina’s legacy is carried on by a sprawling, beautiful family. She is survived by her beloved children, Vincent, Denis, and Cheryl, and she lives on in the hearts of her more than 35 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind cherished memories with her close cousins Mavis Mardner, Daphnie Salmon, Cyril Taylor, and Lenieve Linton. She is now peacefully reunited in eternal rest with her beloved husband, Owen; her two dear sons, Michael and Paul; all of her beloved siblings; and her cousin, Olga Facey.
