

Harold Carl Newman, died Sunday February 12, 2017, two weeks shy of his 92nd birthday. Harold was born on February 27, 1925, in Far Rockaway, New York, son of the late William and Lillian Newman. Harold graduated from Far Rockaway High School. He was a combat wounded veteran, having served in the United States Navy. He was a sonar operator on the USS Fiske, which was torpedoed amidships and sunk on August 2, 1944, in the North Atlantic. After 6 weeks recovering in the hospital, Harold finished his naval career serving on the USS Slater, which is currently a floating museum on the Hudson River, in Albany, New York. Harold was awarded The Purple Heart medal, after being wounded in battle. After World War II, Harold graduated from Adelphi College, in Garden City, New York. Harold had a successful career in the insurance business, running his own business for many years. He was a life long athlete, having played for a semi-pro baseball team, called the Ramblers, before enlisting in the Navy. He was a golf enthusiast. Harold also loved ping pong, having won ping pong tournaments in his youth. He also loved playing billiards. Harold was a long time stamp collector, and had an extensive collection that he amassed over a 50 year period. Harold was also an avid standard bred horse owner, and was involved in racing and in the breeding of Standard bred horses. Harold and his wife, Anastasia, lived and raised their family in Huntington Station, New York. They retired to Port St. Lucie in 1990. They resided part time on Long Pond, in the Belgrade Lakes region, Maine, spending many summers there. Harold and Stacy celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on February 9, 2017. Harold is survived by his wife, Anastasia, and their faithful dog, Rocky, of Port St. Lucie, as well as his sister, Marilyn Tulgan and her husband, Stanley, of Boca Raton, Florida. He is also survived by his children; Diane Pappin Newman and her husband, Steve of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Donald Newman MD, and his wife Lisa, of Andreas, Pennsylvania, David Newman, and his wife Melissa Dennison Newman DMD, of Atkinson, New Hampshire, Dale Page, and her husband T.R., of Melbourne, Florida, and Douglas Newman, and his wife Beth, of Mill Valley, California. Harold is also survived by ten grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillian, as well as his brother Saul, who was a prisoner of war at the Battle of the Bulge. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C..
