

John David Sorel of Stuart, FL passed away on February 20, 2026, surrounded by love. He lived a life marked by service, adventure, and a quiet strength, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on January 13, 1947 in New Britain, CT, Dave grew up in Plainville, CT and was a 1965 graduate of E.C. Goodwin Technical School. He had a strong sense of independence and a deep appreciation for the outdoors – values that stayed with him throughout his life. These qualities later guided him into proud service of his country.
Dave honorably served in the United States Navy during the Viet Nam War and served two tours of duty there. His military service was a defining chapter in his life one he carried with pride, humility, and a deep respect for his fellow servicemen.
He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Barbara Bull Sorel, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage. Together they built a live filled with companionship, shared adventures, and unwavering love. Though they did not have children, their lives were rich in close friendships and meaningful connections that became family. Dave was always helping someone with their cars, plumbing, electrical work, cutting trees down, closing pools, etc. He was the neighborhood handyman.
An avid outdoorsman, Dave had a lifelong passion for hunting and a true love of adventure. He especially cherished his three trips to Africa – experiences that brought him joy, fulfillment, and stories he loved to share. Neighborhood kids would love to see his trophies hanging in the garage. Whether in the field, traveling abroad, or spending quite time with those closest to him, he found peace in nature and purpose in living fully. When retiring in Florida, Dave found enjoyment and formed many great friendships at Martin County Sportsmen’s Association. He was proud of serving as a range officer, treasurer, and board member at the club.
Those who knew him will remember Dave for his strength, loyalty, and steady presence. He was a man of character, courage, and integrity, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer Sorel and Katherine (Arneth), his siblings Henry Wellin, Elizabeth Riera and Francis Miller, his sister-in-law Patricia Bull, brother-in-law Richard Bull for whom they shared a very special bond. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, sister-in-law Mary Jane Lozefski (Raymond), Laura Driscoll (Michael – deceased), Barbara Bull (Richard – deceased) and Janice Wellin. He has many wonderful nephews and a special niece – Amy.
A Celebration of his Life will be held March 14, 2026 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Aycock at Tradition, 12571 SW Tradition Parkway in Port St Lucie, FL. Military honors will be rendered at this service at 2:00 pm at Rolling Oaks Cemetery, 2200 SW Del Rio Blvd., in Port St Lucie. FL 34953. All are welcome to attend.
