

SCARBOROUGH -- Anthony B. 'Goomba' Walsh, 85, of Portland, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Mr. Walsh was born in Portland on April 15, 1925, the son of Phillip and Anna Conley Walsh. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1943. He played football and basketball throughout his school years.
Mr. Walsh entered into the U.S. Navy in 1943 at age 17 and served 11 years. He spent most of his time serving on the USS Cabot Aircraft Carrier where he was a fire control technician. He also fired the guns that shot down Japanese kamikaze planes. After military service, he was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of which he served as Vice President for several years until he started his own business in 1965. He became the Owner and Operator of Walsh Electric Inc. and ran this company until his retirement in 1987. During his business years, Mr. Walsh did many large commercial projects such as schools, shopping centers, and commercial buildings.
Mr. Walsh was an avid golfer for many years and was a longtime member of the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth. One of his proudest moments was a hole in one on the ninth hole.
He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn of 42 years. He is survived by four children, Steve Walsh of Portland, Kathy Allen of Westbrook, Tim Walsh of South Portland, and Trish Roy of Freeport; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; as well as many close friends.
The family of Anthony Walsh would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for the special care given to Mr. Walsh.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, July 13, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Wooford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
