GRAY - Harley 'Butch' Spurling Jr. fought a mighty battle, but lost on April 7, 2016. He was the first son to Harley Sr. and Elaine 'Sargent' Spur- ling, and the fifth of their family of ten. Butch was well-known for many things but most notably for his contagious laugh, his sense of humor, his love of life and going fast. He shared a passion for music (especially the 60s tunes), dancing, mud runs, snowmobiling, water skiing, canoeing, fast cars and old cars. However, he was never convinced to like a Ford. He was a hard worker always doing more than his share. He started working on a dairy farm very young. He worked at Cole Farms, Pioneer Plastics, and The Steer House. He then became a commercial fisherman for many years. From there he became a long-haul truck driver. When he decided to get out of long-haul trucking, he moved to Southwest Harbor where he resided for two years before moving back to Gray. He and his longtime companion, Anne White, took several trips together. The most enjoyable one was their trip to England. He was predeceased by his father, his sister Rosanne Charland, and a nephew, James Bonney. He is survived by his mother; sisters Roxanne Sullivan, Ruthanne Bonney, Robbie Orlando and Wanda Spurling all of Gray, and Wendy Spurling of Maryland; and his brothers Lee and Danny Spurling of New Gloucester, and Roger Spurling of Eustis. He also leaves three nieces, eight nephews, and one great-nephew, along with many other relatives and friends from near and far. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home in Portland. Burial will be on June 4, at 11 a.m. in Gray Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Gosnell House11 Hunnewell Road Scarborough, ME 04074, or: Gray Fire and Rescue125 Shaker Road Gray, ME 04039
