Hazel Patricia Davis, age 89, of East Bridge St, Westbrook passed away Thursday February 5, 2015 at Mercy Hospital after a long and hard-fought battle against several ailments.
She was born in Portland daughter of Albert and Ruby Rasch McLellan. She attended Portland schools graduating from Portland High School class of 1942.
Hazel was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with family. She was ever the perennial favorite to sit beside and hold a conversation, and she loved to spend time at her family’s camp on Sebago Lake. She often joked, saying “ we never owned a boat that I didn’t wind up in the water.” Her humor was always present. Her occasionally gruff mannerisms were constantly belied by her kindness to those around her and the ever favorite quote, “God Love’em.”
Hazel loved Christmas, especially as it marked the time when family would always gather, dressed in their best, often taking up three rows at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Portland. Following services, the family would gather for an evening of merrymaking and joy that was unparalleled. She loved those times and continued to attend despite late difficulties in getting around. Loved and cherished by all who knew her, Hazel will be solely missed.
Hazel was an avid craftswomen and wonderful cook. Her knitting products were often bestowed as gifts upon her family, and many of these items are still being worn. Her cooking was wonderful, and the entire family would lament any day her dishes did not make it to the holiday table. It was with great joy that all enjoyed her food.
She is predeceased by her husband Chester E. Davis, Sr., in 1981 and grandson Terry in 2014.
She leaves her daughter, Sandra-Lee McCutcheon and her husband Terrance, as well as 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Mercy Hospital for the great care given to Hazel. Also to her amazingly dedicated daughter Sandra and granddaughter Susan, who spent day and night next to Hazel’s bedside while she was at the hospital. Additionally, the family would like to thank Mary Charlton for the loving care and friendship in Hazel’s life. It truly meant the world to her.
A Memorial Service will be announced later this spring that will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with interment in Forest City Cemetery, So. Portland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Hazel’s memory to Animal Refuge League, Stroudwater St, Westbrook, Me. 04092.
