He was born in Portland, the son of Joseph E. Brogan Sr. and Margaret L. Brogan, on Nov. 23, 1920. He graduated from Portland High School with the class of 1938 and also attended the Northeast School of Accounting after serving in the U.S. Army in England during World War II.
Eddie worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years, participating in the transition from the historic Railway Mail Service to the eventual modern system of delivery. He worked his way up from a temporary employee to mail clerk to supervisor to manager of training and development in the Portland office. He is remembered as a kind and gentle supervisor who loved teaching and training. Eddie was known and respected for his prodigious work ethic, often working additional jobs at local businesses including Wyman Bros., The Computer Center, and Direct Mail of Maine. While working at The Computer Center and Direct Mail of Maine, he met Thomas “TJ” Cloutier, who became a lifelong friend. After retirement from the Postal Service, Eddie continued to work at TJ’s businesses, well into his eighties.
Eddie was married to Nancy (Lapomarda) Brogan on Sept. 8, 1942. They lived in Portland and then Falmouth, and were the proud and loving parents of three children: Jennifer, Jonathan and Joel.
Eddie is survived by his wife Nancy, of Falmouth; daughter Jennifer Brogan, and her husband Kevin Farrell, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas; son Jonathan Brogan, and his wife Elizabeth Brogan, of Cape Elizabeth; and son Joel Brogan, and his wife Marcia Brogan, of Falmouth. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, of whom he was immensely proud: Brogan Farrell, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Aaron Brogan and Anna Brogan, of Cape Elizabeth; and Justin Brogan and Julia Brogan, of Falmouth.
Eddie loved his family. Later in life, one of his greatest joys was following the academic and athletic achievements of his grandchildren. He relished keeping newspaper clippings detailing their accomplishments and telling his friends about their successes. In the last few years of his life, he had moved to Ocean View in Falmouth, where he made many new friends and renewed some old friendships. He enjoyed cards, pool, golf and reading. At the urging of the staff, he began a daily exercise program, which he enjoyed immensely. Eddie was a faithful communicant of Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth.
The family is grateful to the staff of Ocean View for their professionalism and kindness. Eddie was blessed with many deep friendships there, which he cherished.
