June Backus Asch

PORTLAND - June B. Asch, 91, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016. She was born in Portland, ME, on August 14, 1925, a daughter of Martin and Janet McCue Backus. She grew up in Brandon, VT., moving to Norway, ME. where she graduated from Norway High School in 1943.

June had been a member of the United Church of Christ and taught Sunday school at Williston Church and Woodfords Church. She had volunteered at the Woodfords School for Trainable Children and spent winters in Florida where she enjoyed playing golf and swimming. Her family and her faith were very important to her throughout the years.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Ralph Romano, Jr., her second husband, Paul Asch, a sister, Virginia Libbey and a brother, Allan Backus.

Survivors include a son, Ralph Romano III and his wife Marion of Cape Elizabeth, a daughter, Janet Romano Pelletier and her husband Raoul of Portland; a brother, Robert Backus of Tampa, Fla., four grandchildren, Maria Romano, Joseph Romano, Sasha Shunk and Ralph Pelletier; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Shunk and Jacob Shunk.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11 a.m. from the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME. The Rev. Carolyn Lambert will officiate. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, ME.
