Katherine "Kitty" Louise Thomas, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, just days shy of her 95th birthday, following a brief illness.
Born in Portland, Maine, Kitty was the beloved daughter of James Langella and Henrietta (Zugetti) Langella. She carried with her throughout her life a strong sense of family, resilience, and warmth instilled from an early age, paired with a strong personality, even described as a "hot ticket in a small package".
On January 27th, 1951, Kitty married the love of her life, Richard Thomas, beginning a lifelong partnership built on devotion, laughter, and shared adventures. Together, they raised their daughter, Maureen, who brought immense joy and pride to Kitty's life. Kitty is now reunited in eternal peace with her husband Richard and her daughter Maureen.
Kitty dedicated over 40 years of her career to Maine Savings Bank, where she was respected for her commitment, work ethic, and the relationships she built with colleagues and customers alike. Her professional life was marked by loyalty and pride in serving her community.
Above all else, Kitty's greatest joy was her family. She had a special bond with her grandson, Shawn Johnson, and took immense pride in his life and accomplishments. She delighted in being a great-grandmother to Danielle and Thomas, cherishing every moment spent with them.
Kitty found happiness in life’s simple pleasures—especially time spent at her beloved lake house in Denmark, Maine. In her younger years, she enjoyed winter sports, particularly skiing, embracing the beauty and adventure of Maine winters. Later in life, she and Richard treasured their time as “snowbirds,” escaping to Florida during the colder months and creating lasting memories together.
She is survived by her grandson, Shawn Johnson, his wife Kate Johnson, and her great-grandchildren Danielle and Thomas, as well as her dear sister Rose Cameron. In addition to her husband and daughter, Kitty was predeceased by her eight brothers and sisters.
Family and friends are invited to A Time of Visitation on June 12th from 10 am to 11 am, followed by a Prayer Service at 11 am at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home in Portland. A reception begins at 11:30 am at the funeral home and burial at Brooklawn Memorial Park will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Leukemia Foundation in Kitty’s memory, in honor of her daughter Maureen.
