Marjorie Katherine (Waugh) Erico, 86, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and island rabble rouser went home to the Lord on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at the South Portland Nursing Home.
She was born in Framingham, MA on March 23, 1925, daughter of William J. Waugh and Mary Alice Tibbert Waugh. After graduating from Framingham High School and Framingham Union Hospital School of Nursing, she served in the Cadet Nurse Corps of U.S. Public Health Service during WWII. She later graduated from the University of Southern Maine School of Nursing Nurse Practitioner Program.
During her long nursing career in Maine, Marjorie worked at Mercy Hospital, Community Health, and Maine Medical Center Family Practice. She also provided health care on Peaks Island long before her dream of a Health Center on Peaks Island became a reality. She was known as “the nurse on a bike” because she traveled the island by bicycle. Marjorie worked tirelessly to establish the Peaks Island Health Center where she practiced from its opening in 1976 until her retirement in 1986.
She was a communicant of St. Christopher’s Church; past president of the Women’s Council; member of the parish council; lector; and Eucharistic minister. She also served as president and secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary; past president of Peaks Island School Parent Teacher Association; volunteer at the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum; Charter member of the Emblem Club 126, Framingham, MA; Cub Scout den mother and Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Marjorie was very active in community affairs until illnesses forced her to give up a long time family commitment of being of service to others, a commitment which she learned from her grandmother and which she instilled in her children.
Marjorie enjoyed swimming, reading, writing articles and letters to the newspapers, knitting, and traveling with her husband to many Pearl Harbor Survivor Association reunions across the United States, including Hawaii. A life-long baseball fan, she anxiously awaited opening day each spring and rarely missed watching “her team” the Red Sox on TV or at Fenway Park.
Marjorie is survived by her son, R. Paul Erico and daughter-in-law Heather of Peaks Island, and daughters, Kimberly MacIsaac and son-in-law Steven of Peaks Island and Kendra O’Connell of Durham. She also leaves two granddaughters, Courtney and Marisa MacIsaac; sister, Barbara Ford of Framingham, MA; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Marjorie was predeceased in 2009 by Richard P. Erico, her beloved husband of 60 years. She was also predeceased by two daughters, Kerry Erico MacDonald and Kristin Erico, and brothers, Leonard and William Waugh.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 10:30 am at St. Christopher’s Church, Central Avenue, Peaks Island. A gathering will follow at the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum on Peaks Island.
Burial will be private in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
