Portland - Martin "Marty" Andrew Hansen passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on the morning of June 11, 2012. Marty grew up on Peak's Island, and lived most of the rest of his life in Portland, ME. He was a commercial scallop fisherman out of New Bedford, MA. for much of his life, but had to give up this love at age 43 when his back was broken in an accident. Marty was one of nine siblings, and known to many friends and family members as "Bacardi Marty." He loved to have fun, and kept those around him smiling and laughing.
When Marty was a boy his father, Ray Hansen, lost his life in an accident aboard the ship named Snoopy off the Virginian coast. Two of Ray's close friends, John Doody and Pete Levitt (a survivor on the Snoopy), taught Marty how to scallop, sparking one of his greatest passions. Another of Ray's friends, and survivor aboard the Snoopy, was Marty's Uncle, Leeman French. Leeman became a father-figure in Marty's life, and he spent a lot of time with him, his Aunt, Joan French and their children Martin and Leanne. Marty's cousin, Martin French, was by his side nearly everyday during his sickness. Growing up, Marty's best friend was his younger brother, Paul Hansen, who passed away in March of 1995. Marty also loved to spend a great deal of time with his Aunt, Audrey Bryant - his gambling partner. Known to his many nieces and nephews as "Uncle Mutt," Marty was notorious for his one-liners, and crazy antics. His late Mother, Barbara Souza, made a rhyme about him; "Mart tart, let a fart, and blew the island all apart." Marty loved his friends and family, but closest to his heart was his daughter, Amanda Hansen-Scott (whom he frequently referred to as "A.E."). Marty also acted as a father to Amanda's younger brother, Matthew Frazier, who was not biologically his son. As an adult Amanda moved to Florida with her husband, Sean Scott. It was shortly after the birth of their beautiful daughter, Chloe, that Marty became ill. He was unable to travel to meet her, but talked with Amanda and Chloe on the phone almost daily: so much so, that Chloe adopted one of his favorite phrases, "I-yi-yi-yi-yi." A few short weeks before he passed away, they made the trip from Florida to Maine and Marty was able to see his beloved daughter, and her husband, for the last time, and meet his precious granddaughter for the first. Marty's passing brings great sadness, he is dearly loved, and will be sorely missed by so many.
Marty Hansen is predeceased by his father Ray Hansen, mother Barbara Souza, brother Paul Hansen, cousin Leanne French, brother-in-law Norman Egeland, , sister Marlene Hansen, and brother Charles Hansen.
He is survived by his daughter Amanda Hansen-Scott (husband Sean Scott), granddaughter Chloe Scott, brother Daniel Hansen (wife Bette Hansen), sister Donna Egeland (late husband Norman Egeland), sister Alma Glenn (husband Walter Glenn), sister Denise “Toni” Murphy (husband Bernard Murphy), brother Gregory Souza, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces. nephews, great nieces and great nephews and friends.
