

Martin Henry Lyden, Jr., 87, died April 3, 2012 peacefully at his home in Portland with his long-term companion, Barbara, by his side. He was born on June 24, 1924 in Portland, a son of the late Sadie Marguerite (Conley) and Martin Henry Lyden. Before finishing his education, he worked at The Portland Shipyard. Soon after working at the shipyard he served briefly in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Lyden worked at Yudy's Tire, as well as several other jobs, before his lengthy employment for The Portland Terminal Company as a freight conductor.
In 1950, he married Katherine L. Greenlaw. They made their home, and raised their family in Portland. Mrs. Lyden died in 1989.
In 1992, he met Barbara L. Shannon from Portland. From the time they met, a friendship was cultivated that grew into a loving bond. Together they shared a vibrant life infused with love, laughter, traveling and family ties.
Mr. Lyden enjoyed artwork, cruises, RV-ing, dancing, the Boston Red Sox and family get together's, known as Marty's Parties.
He was predeceased by four sisters: Catherine Merrithew, Ellen Olson, Sadie Merrill and Annette Payeur, and two brothers: Raymond Gregory Lyden and Eugene Francis Lyden, Sr.
Mr. Lyden is survived by his beloved significant other, Barbara L. Shannon, two daughters, Martina Mitchell, Prudence Gelinas and her husband Stephen; a sister Virginia Kern, cherished and dear friends, Dr. Mike Shannon and his wife Kathleen, Patricia LaPierre and her husband Win; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to The Cedars, especially Mike Denbow, Dr. Gary Green, Dr. Demitri Antioniou, Tootsies Girls and especially Beacon Hospice.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of Visitation from 6-8 pm Friday, April 6 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, where an Elks service will be held at 7 pm. A Memorial Service will be held 11 am Saturday, April 7 at North Deering Congregational Church, 1364 Washington Ave., Portland with the Rev. Mark Rustin officiating.
