Mary Carol Pochebit, age 83 passed away peacefully on Thursday morning October 19, 2017 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Carol was born on December 21, 1933 Louisville, KY, the daughter of Dr. Frank C. and Louise Salter Bohannan. Due to her father’s health, the family relocated to the warm and dry climate air of Carlsbad, NM. Mary Carol graduated from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in union with the University of Texas El Paso in 1954. She was senior class president and upon graduation retained as part of the faculty staff.
Mary Carol met her husband John on a triple blind date between nurses and engineers. When Mary Carol and John went out for vanilla ice cream and coffee on their first date, she said “He doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going to marry him.”
Seventeen dates later they became engaged. They married on September 24, 1956. Then they moved to Maine to start their family. Together they raised three sons. Mary Carol was a loving mother enjoying all aspects of her son’s lives from fishing to little league. She was past president of the Cheverus Mother’s Club, and active in many other local organizations and causes. She worked as a senior nurse at Seaside Nursing Home for over 10 years while her sons attended college. She then worked as an office manager for her husband’s engineering firm for several years.
Mary Carol loved her daily trips to the mall, drives to the ocean and shopping for antiques clocks. She was a gentle loving woman who made close and lasting friendships with whomever she came in contact with. She especially enjoyed weekly get togethers, and having breakfast with her sons and their friends. Those breakfasts carried over to her and John enjoying special time with their eleven grandchildren. She would pray the Rosary every day without fail which extended to her role as a Eucharistic Minister and a devote Catholic leading by example, the anchor of her family. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
She is predeceased by her granddaughter Alison Pochebit, grandson, Michael Pochebit and daughter-in-law, Julie “Morin” Pochebit.
Besides her loving husband John of 62 years, she leaves her brother Frank C.
