

Mary Alice (Lindgren) Schassberger, 95, died on July 22, 2023. Mary Alice was born in Gary, Indiana on August 7, 1927, the daughter of Otto and Mary Gem Lindgren. She grew up in Gary, New Orleans LA, and Crown Point IN, before attending Purdue University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. It was there where she met her husband of 68 years Arthur F. Schassberger. They were married in 1950 and moved to Crown Point, IN.
Mary Alice began her pharmacy career at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. She moved to Methodist Hospital in Gary to be closer to her home in Crown Point. She temporarily gave up her career to raise her four sons- Jeff, Don, Jim, and John. When her sons were all in school. She returned to the pharmacy working in other hospitals and retail stores. She and her family then began moving every few years following Art’s career to Goshen, IN, Bennettsville, SC, and Brea, CA before returning to Indiana. When she lived in Mitchell, IN, she worked at Spring Mill State Park and dressed in period costume and demonstrated how to weave with an antique loom. Mary Alice and Art retired in 1987 to West Baldwin, ME, where they lived in a 150 year old farmhouse before they built a log home in their 60 acres.
In retirement, Mary Alice and Art kept very busy serving and volunteering at their small church in West Baldwin. They were also able to travel with friends to over 30 countries throughout the world. When they were not raveling, they enjoyed visiting their grandchildren in Tennessee, Indiana, and Maine.
Mary Alice was predeceased by her husband Arthur and her son Jim. She is survived by her three sons, Jeff and his wife Holly and their children Sarah and her husband Abe, Brandon and his wife Michele, and Allison and her husband Dustin; Don and his wife Katie and their daughters Lauren and Molly; and john and his wife Cindy and their sons Jack and Parker; and eight great grandchildren. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice and be kind and understanding to others. There will be no funeral services. Arrangements for a private graveside ceremony are pending.
