

Maymartin Oakes Holloway Tompkins passed away on July 2, 2015. She was the youngest of four daughters of Arthur J. and Violet E. Holloway, born August 8, 1920 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Much of her youth and formative years were spent in Halifax Nova Scotia, her ancestral home. Her family returned to the states in the depths of the Depression when she was fourteen years old. When she finished high school, she attended business school and then entered the work world in Boston. She met her future husband, Paul Tompkins, at night school after the war. They married in 1946. Together they followed Paul's career throughout the northeast and finally settled their family in Maine in the early 50s.
In addition to raising five children, Martie was an entrepreneur and artist. She started Maine Meadows Kiln in the 60s creating unique free form pottery from wildflowers and rocks from Maine. Her signature dishes were appreciated around the world. Her artwork, whether in pottery or painting, continued throughout her life.
Always concerned about her community, Martie was well known for her commitment to her church and to social needs. She volunteered at Ronald Mc Donald House, Eunice Frye Home, PTA, Girl Scouts and the Preble Street soup kitchen. She was on the board of governors of Seventy Five State Street, a member of Women's Literary Union, United Maine Craftsmen, Southern Maine Craftsmen and Female Samaritans. As a member of Trinity Episcopal Church for more than 60 years, Martie served on Altar Guild, taught Sunday school and worked on the annual church fair. A member of Altrusa International of Portland Maine for many years, she served as president and board member and was the recipient of the Gabrielle Crepeau Leadership Award.
Martie had wonderful friendships that lasted a lifetime. She loved to travel and had a many memorable trips with friends and family including a trip to China in the early 80s.
Martie was predeceased by her husband, Paul, her grandson, Benjamin DeVilleneuve, her parents and sisters, Evelyn, Rita and Jean. She is survived by her five children: Mrs. Robert DeVilleneuve (Gail), Mrs. Armand Blouin (Deborah), Mrs. Leo Gaudet (Pamela), Kimberly Keaney (partner, Paul Knight), Matthew Tompkins (wife, Sandy), thirteen grandchildren: Rob, Michele, Jill, Tom, Eric Matt, Audra, Emilie, Hannah, Abigail, Emma, Will and Quinn and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland Maine. A funeral service will be at 11 am on Thursday, July 9th, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Coyle Street at Forest Avenue in Portland.
