Born on November 3, 1941, in Malden, Massachusetts, to Leo and Beatrice McCormack, Neill grew up in Wilmington alongside his twin brother, Hugh. After graduating from Wilmington High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and graduated as Company Honor Man from the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. He served for three years as an Aircrewman aboard the USS Wasp, flying anti-submarine missions on Grumman S2F Trackers.
Upon returning home following an honorable discharge, he met the love of his life, Lorraine. They marked their 62nd wedding anniversary on November 28, 2025. Neill began his career attending college under the GI Bill while working two jobs to support his family. In those early days, he often worked nights at the same school where he attended classes during the day. Neill and his family later moved West to California, where he worked for several years in the nascent microchip industry.
He eventually returned East, settling with his family in Maine. After leaving the microchip sector, he founded two businesses specializing in ISO 9001 quality assurance auditing and training for companies around the globe. He later joined GE Healthcare, retiring as a lead quality auditor for medical devices.
Neill pursued his love of flying by becoming a licensed private pilot and never missed a chance to go boating on Casco Bay. He was a dedicated student of Shotokan Karate, earning his black belt at the level of Shodan. He was proud of his Irish heritage, and while a serious man, all who knew him quickly discovered his wry Irish wit. He was a devoted fan of his hometown Boston Red Sox and was thrilled to watch them in person during their run to the 2013 World Series Championship.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine McCormack; his children, Jessica McCormack and Sean McCormack and his wife, Martha; his cherished grandchildren, Grace, Aife, Joseph, and Aine; and his brother, Dan McCormack. He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Beatrice McCormack, and his siblings: his twin brother Hugh, Ted, Alan, Mary June, and Gail.
The family is grateful that he was able to complete his life journey peacefully at home, exactly as he wished. He loved Irish music and spent his final hours listening to his favorite tunes, including “The Parting Glass,” which includes these lyrics: “So fill to me the parting glass / And drink a health whate'er befalls / Then gently rise and softly call / Good night and joy be to you all.”
Details of a memorial service to be held at a future date will be announced.
