He was born May 15, 1950 in Cochituate, Massachusetts and was the son of John and Josephine (Donato) Gebhardt.
Richard was a loyal friend, in service to others. He was often the first person called when someone needed help. From helping friends with car problems, to getting up in the middle of the night to plow an open a driveway, or fix a broken furnace, he always put the needs of others first.
A talented machinist and well versed in all building trades Richard started working soon after graduating high school. He worked at companies as far ranging as Raytheon, a paper laminating company- EPCO, and the MetroWest Daily News in Massachusetts. His selfless approach and hardworking ethic lead him to great successes throughout his working career, including a final chapter after retirement, starting and operating Gebhardt Property Management of Portland, Maine with his youngest son.
He enjoyed traveling throughout the world, taking cruises, and most recently RV-ing in the United States. Richard had a great sense of humor and was an engaging storyteller. He cared deeply about his family and found great joy in the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his longtime companion Elizabeth DeLuca; four children Christina Gabrus & husband Donald of Bennington, Vermont, Paul Gebhardt & wife Jessica of Yarmouth, Shawn Gebhardt & wife Moira of South Portland, and Timothy Gebhardt & wife Nirvana of Portland; grandchildren Courtney, Kaitlyn, Lexie, Amelia, Julian, Calder, Loralai, Ava, and Durres; and many nieces and nephews.
