Richard "Dick" Wyse, 80, of 57 Idlewood Dr., Cumberland, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at a local hospital on October 11th. Dick was born in Portland, Maine and attended Cathedral Grammar School and Cheverus High School. He was a graduate of St. Francis College and held a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Maine.
Teaching came naturally to Dick and he enjoyed working with children, many of whom saw him as a father figure. He began his teaching career at Biddeford High School where he taught history and coached varsity football, leading the team to two consecutive Maine State Championships.
He became the Superintendent of the Maine Youth Center where he presided until his retirement in 1998. He was a founding member of the Falmouth Country Club where he was an avid golfer for 25 years and could always be found on the course or at the 19th hole playing cards with his many friends. He was especially proud of his recognition as a "Super Senior" by the Falmouth Country Club and scored a hole in one in 1999.
Dick enjoyed international travel. Bermuda was his favorite place and he and his wife Beverly were married there. During his life, he also visited and golfed in Ecuador, Panama, Mexico, Ireland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Scotland.
He sang in the choir at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception as a youth. Later, he trained with William Glaser, M.D. and became certified in Reality Therapy. He was a delegate to the National Federation of Catholic Colleges and a board member at Delta Dental from 1991-2000.
He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and loved to watch golf with family and friends.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, and devoted children (from a previous marriage) James and his wife Carrie from Reading, Massachusetts, Carolyn and her fiancé Donald Robinson from Scarborough, Joseph and his wife Erin Finley-Wyse from Falmouth, and son Paul and his husband François Germain from Ottawa Canada.
