Gorham- Robert J. Mahoney, 71, of Gorham passed away on November 2, 2014, after a long illness with cardiomyopathy. Bob was born in Portland, during WWII, to Andrew J. Mahoney Sr., and Arlene E. Lundy. He attended Portland schools, and in 1962 he enrolled in the United States Marine Corps. His time spent as a Marine made a lasting impression on his life, and it was one of his proudest accomplishments. When he left the Corps, the Corps did not leave him. He carried himself with honor, and performed each job he had with diligence and the values instilled in him by his time in the service. After his Marie Corp service, Bob became a member of the United States Army Reserve.
In 1982, he met the love of his life, Deborah, and together they were blessed to share 32 years of marriage. In 1997 he suffered the first series of cardiac events. These events led him to his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and his membership at the First Assembly of God in Portland. Through all of his health challenges, Bob never lost his unique sense of humor, and refused to give into discouragement. Bob loved to cook, and used to donate his time to cook holiday meals for the residents of the Friendship House in Portland. He also loved his weekly football games, listening to gospel music, and reading.
He is survived by his wife Deborah F. Mahoney, his son Reverend Christopher J. Mahoney, and his significant other Meredith Nickerson of Gorham, a son from a previous marriage, Patrick Mahoney of South Carolina, a brother Andrew J. Mahoney Jr., and his wife Pat of New Gloucester, two aunts, and several cousins. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with Military Honors, on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Pinegrove Cemetery, 9 Waite’s Landing Rd, Falmouth ME. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. In lieu of flower, the family asks that you consider a donation in Bob’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 6667.
Robert’s family wishes to thank the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, the Heart Failure Nurses, and the staff of R7 at the Maine Medical Center for their care and attention during Bob’s many hospitalizations this year.
