Thomas Patrick Winger, 33, of Falmouth, ME and San Francisco, CA, passed away unexpectedly on March 31, 2025. He was born on June 5, 1991, to Holly and Lawrence C. Winger; Tommy lived a happy, productive and meaningful life. To know Tommy was to love him.
He grew up in Falmouth with older brother Charlie. He attended Falmouth schools, excelling academically, athletically and socially. He was a three-season athlete, soccer in the fall and captain of the school’s indoor and outdoor track teams. Sprints and jumps were his forte, bringing home team and eight individual state championships during his HS years.
Tommy graduated from Yale College in 2013, with a degree in Geology and four years participation on the track team. He credited his athletic pursuits for their positive impact on his time management skills. He worked for the environmental services firm Ramboll Inc. since 2014, after closing out the 2013/2014 ski season at Sugarloaf Mountain. He took the job offer phone call from the top of the mountain, thankful for the good reception. Sugarloaf remained near and dear to his heart, he was returning home for the annual Reggae Fest in April 2025, when he passed. Tommy witnessed the 2024 Eclipse from the Loaf with immediate family and friends, a spectacular and joyful experience. His Ramboll colleagues have shared wonderful tributes to his leadership, humor and commitment to their success; only confirming the magnitude of our loss.
Tommy served as best man at his brother Charlie’s wedding in June 2019, warmly welcoming his new sister-in-law Rebecca. He was a proud uncle to his nieces, sharing FaceTime and videos to stay current in between red-eye flights home. Tommy skied with Charlie and friends in Colorado, California and Utah. The brothers participated in two Tough Mudder events together in 2015, in Las Vegas and Seattle. Tommy also served as valet for Charlie and friend Connor Cobean, at the World’s Toughest Mudder 24-hour event in Vegas in 2016.
Tommy made friends easily and was proud of every friendship; local Falmouth, college and Cali kindred spirits. He was very smart and had a zest for fun. He shared many a late-night drive to the Loaf with his dad, after Friday night track meets. He loved being outside: hiking, biking, running, skiing, skating and watching sunsets from Maine’s Mackworth Island and San Fran’s Ocean Beach. He learned landscaping from The Lewis Brothers, leveraging those skills at home for his appreciative parents. He was an active participant of a Mother/Son book group from seventh grade thru high school. We started with Lord of the Flies, enjoyed deep discussions on A Separate Peace and Killer Angels. We read every new Harry Potter book as they came out, Volumes 5, 6 and 7. Tommy got his first pair of glasses in November 2001, the day the first Harry Potter movie was released. He was subsequently mistaken for Harry while traveling by train from London to Cambridge in 2002. He was greeted, like Norm in Cheers, as “Harry” when arriving at summer track camps at Bates and Bowdoin colleges. Everyone wore Harry Potter glasses at Tommy’s thirteenth birthday party held at “Camp Coster.” He took his mom to Game 1 of the Celtics 2024 Championship Finals at TD Garden. He served as her dinner and dance partner at weddings in NYC and Sonoma, hailing an Uber when they missed the bus to one of the destination events.
Tommy is survived by his parents, brother Charlie and wife Rebecca and their two daughters, along with his favorite uncles Bill and Kerry Donovan, Doug Arbo. Friends too numerous to name, but including Jack, Ben, Sam, Nick and Chris who all shared ski slopes and good times. California friends Sophia, Ben, Angela and Patrick enjoyed concerts and festivals with Tommy in CA and beyond. Tommy was preceded in death by grandparents Bill and Pat Donovan and Harry and Arlene Winger.
While we knew Tommy was fast, we did not expect him to cross the finish line of life so quickly. No words can capture the gifts of Tommy’s presence and companionship, or the depth to which his absence will now be felt. We are thankful for the tremendous support we have received and will continue to need. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a future date. In the interim, please toast to Thomas Patrick whenever you see a beautiful sunset, as this will help keep our memories of Tommy vibrant. Donations can be made to the Falmouth Memorial Library (www.falmouthmemoriallibrary.org) in Tommy’s name.
