

Portland- Thurlow Lester “Woodie” Woodbury, 86, passed away at the Barron Center on Sunday, September 22, 2013 after a long illness. The son of Thurlow F. and Marion (Chandler) Woodbury, he was born in Portland, ME on January 21, 1927.
He attended Portland schools graduating from Deering High School, class of 1946. He was very proud to be a three palm Eagle Scout.
He joined the Merchant Marines and traveled to Murmansk, Russia during World War II, and he served as a Radio man in the Navy during the Korean War.
Returning to Portland after his discharge, he worked in the Auditing department of the Maine Central Railroad, retiring in 1984. He also served on the Board of Directors at the Railroad Credit Union for many years.
He was a member of Cornerstone Lodge, Kora Temple Band and was treasurer of the band for many years. He was also a member of Joppa Royal Arch Chapter, Lake Region Shrine Club, the Scottish Rite and the St. Albans Commandry where he also played in the band. Woodie enjoyed his time with the Westbrook City Band where he played for many years.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Maxine E. Dunaver and is survived by three daughters: Nancy Greenwald, and her husband Robert of Portland, Jane Madden, and her husband Thomas of Cumberland, and Beryl Fossett , and her husband Daniel of Cumberland, six grandchildren, Sarah Johnson and her husband Alex of Bryant Pond, David Greenwald and his wife, Megan of Philipsburg, PA, Benjamin and Lori Madden of Cumberland and Diane and Danielle Fossett also of Cumberland, and two great grandchildren, Mackenzie Johnson and Kaitlynn Greenwald.
Family and friends are invited to a attend visitation and luncheon on Saturday, September 28 from 10:00-12:00 PM at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Blanchard Cemetery, 215 Winn Rd in Falmouth, ME.
