

Falmouth- William M. Dox, Jr., 93, of Falmouth, passed away on September 19, 2011, at home with his family He was born in West Hartford, Connecticut, the son of William M. Dox and Evelyn Wander Dox. He graduated from Yale University in 1940 and immediately entered active service with the US Navy, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was awarded the Bronze Star with a V for valor for action in Leyte Gulf, Philippine Islands in October 1944.
After attending Harvard Business School, he moved to Portland to begin his long insurance career. He also served as the training commander of the Naval Reserves in the Portland area for many years, rising to the rank of Captain.
Bill was involved with many area organizations, including Maine Charitable Mechanics, the Seashore Trolley Museum, the Narrow Gauge Railroad, the 470 Club, the Tuesday Morning Discussion Group, the Portland Marine Society, and the Woodfords Club. He was also a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
He was married to Anna Morris Dox for 60 years. His family was very important to him. He is survived by his wife Anna, his children, Edward, Evelyn Dox Garland and her husband Steven, Jennifer Dox Ross and her husband Kurt, and Jonathan and his wife Lisa Branco, and six grandchildren, Abigail Dox, Eliza Dox, Dylan Ross, Colby Ross, Spencer Garland and Tom Garland.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church 580 Forest Avenue in Portland on Saturday September 24 at 11:00 AM. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford Street, Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s memory to the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport ,PO Box A, Kennebunkport ME, 04046, or Trinity Episcopal Church in Portland.
