Adam Nicholas Miller was born in Portland, Oregon, to parents Joe and Renee’ (Martin) Miller on June 2, 1983. Adam and his two brothers Joe and Ben were raised in Tualatin, Oregon. Adam was very active in sports playing soccer and baseball. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church of Sherwood, OR. He graduated from Tualatin High School in 2001. Adam later attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, where he pursued degree in business and accounting. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2005 and a master’s degree in 2006. Adam went on to pursue a career as an accountant with KPMG and subsequently PacifiCorp.
Adam was a lover of board games, card games, and golf. He also enjoyed going on hikes with his brothers. His most favorite activity was trying to stump his father, brothers, and friends with sports trivia. Adam had a unique sense of humor, a quick wit, and an incredible memory. He really enjoyed his relationship with his father Joe and he enjoyed giving his dad a hard time and getting a rise out of him whenever possible.
Adam was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer (glioblastomas) on March 19th, 2010. At the time, the doctors gave Adam a 25% chance of living another 2 years. The day after the diagnosis, Adam underwent the first of three surgeries and cemented his decision to remain positive, stay optimistic, and to fight. Following his first surgery, Adam became very involved in running, endurance training, and intense physical activity in order to strengthen his body in his war against his disease. He endured surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. During this journey, Adam perpetually sustained a bright, determined spirit, and a positive attitude. He never let himself be down or wallow in self-pity or ask “why me” During his fight, he focused not only on his own battle; he also supported others in their own fights against cancer. For a year after his first surgery, Adam let his beard grow and then and then auctioned its “shaving” to raise money in support of St. Baldrick’s Children’s Cancer Foundation. He inspired friends and family to donate money to the cause of cancer research and raised nearly $5,000 dollars. Adam’s fight was truly an inspiration to his family and his many close friends who walked alongside him in support.
Adam passed away in Tualatin, OR, on July 11, 2014, with his heartbroken family at his side. He was 31. Not only had he beaten the original 2 year projected window of survival, he lived a total of four and a half years following the original diagnosis.
Adam will be remembered as someone who always put others before himself. He was selfless, loving, and giving. He was a loving son, brother, schoolmate, coworker, and friend, and he will be missed.
Adam is survived by his parents Joe and Renee’ Miller; brothers Joe and Ben (Cristina) Miller; and many extended family and friends.
