Alicia Sanders lived. Born and raised in Queens, New York, she moved to San Francisco in the late 80’s where she found her queer community. She worked as a landscaper, participated in sports, had many friends and lovers, and made many great memories. Active throughout her life, Alicia played soccer and rugby, loved biking and hiking. Her favorite memories were rollerblading over the Golden Gate Bridge, driving the Miata down the 101, attending Dykes on Bikes and playing for the US women's soccer team at the Gay Games in Australia. Later, Alicia moved to San Diego and then Portland where she found community in nature and bird watching. Alicia loved jazz, art and especially loved her cat Boudica. She could be found driving her truck to the beach, at the local art museum, or brightening someone's day with her wit and charm.
Despite being abandoned by her surviving blood relatives, Alicia died in hospice surrounded by the love and care of her queer family. She is preceded in death by her dear parents, Joan and Robert, her brother Dean and beloved younger sister K.C.. Alicia lived her life on her own terms and her spirit will be missed.
There will be a celebration of her life in Portland at the end of March. Please email [email protected] for more information
