Doug:

This is Norm. My FB account got hacked and in the time I spent notifying everyone, I was told about Bette.

My wife and I wish to express our condolences. We all remember all too well, the events of the past for we all experiences  and the circumstances of how we got to know each other. 

I will always cherish  the kind words and support Bette gave to my family. Hopefully all the hard work will pay off for your family. She is now at peace in heaven and perhaps has met Hyanna  as they remember the bad old days.

       I have fond & meaningful memories of Bette when we were teenagers involved in the youth group, called Luther League, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Astoria, Oregon.
Bette was gentle, intelligent & kind.  I was blessed by her love for God, life, & the engagement of her interest in her Scandinavian heritage which we shared.  I am still surprised & saddened by her passing.
May our Heavenly Father’s power & might keep you as strong men - her husband & two
sons - in honor of Bette & for the glory of God.

I met Betté in high school, and ALWAYS liked her.  She was smart, kind, and humble...and remained so all her life.  We caught up with one another years later at one of our reunions, and then on Facebook, and I've wondered lately about her, because I wasn't hearing from her. I was so sad to hear she'd been so ill and had moved on to her Heavenly home...there will be wonderful reunions in the future, and I'm glad she is no longer suffering.  My prayers are with Mark and their boys now, that the comforting presence of God will surround them and fill them with peace and sweet memories.

I could not have had a better friend than Bette!  We met each other in the 7th grade & became friends,  We were friends in school but became even better friends after we graduated.  Our friendship has grown stronger every year.   I have so many, many memories. 

To Bette's family my sincere condolences. Bette and I worked at UCLA in the 1970's. Kept in touch over the years. She loved her family a lot. 

One thing I am sure always hear in my head is Aunt Bette’s laugh. It was so sweet and contagious. She would sometimes scrunch her nose and shake her head as she laughed or look around at everyone else. She told me how she grew up with humor in the home, and she encouraged it in her own. Both laughter and tears at remembering people lost or saying goodbye were free to flow.

I always aspired to the kind of marriage my aunt Bette had with uncle Doug. They were made for each other. They laughed a lot and just seemed to get along better than so many couples I have known. She encouraged me to never settle in relationships and to search for the right person for me. I am so grateful for that advice!


Aunt Bette was made for nursing. It was in her nature to be strong, nurturing, and caring. She would do anything for her family.  I believe that she had a bad allergic reaction to some chemical this day, but she still cooked away for a family gathering. I think that in Finnish it’s called sisu.

Aunt Bette was not just an aunt. She was like a big sister at times. When something terrible happened to me once, she stayed up talking with me over the phone  nearly all night. She was a loyal friend, and her calm, positive demeanor had a way of always calming and/or cheering me up - a gem!

Here is Bette when she hosted one of our Norwegian cousins, Magnus. I was once told by her cousin Kjell Martin, “Bette is more Norwegian than we are,” and he meant that in the most flattering way. She helped me to connect to my Nordic roots and had so much enthusiasm for Scandinavian culture and love for the family.
