He married Beverly Marling on June 7, 1963. They were both graduates of Portland State University. He was a member of the 1962 runner-up team at the collegiate national baseball championships.
Known by many as "Coach," Robert was a devoted father to daughters Karen Gray, Kathy Donker (spouse of Rowland Donker) and sons Robert Gray, and Ronald Gray.
He cherished his role as a grandfather to Samuel Gray-Sorensen, Evan Gray, Miranda Donker, and Samantha Donker.
Robert started his impressive 30 year teaching career at Gresham High School, then transferred to David Douglas High School. After retiring, he continued to serve as a guest teacher throughout the school district for 24 years.
Robert was actively involved in his community, dedicating his time and energy to the American Legion Post 1 (SAL) and the Old Timers Baseball Association of Portland. His contributions to these organizations reflected his commitment to service and his passion for youth baseball and softball.
Coach loved long walks on the beach, going to the movie theater, playing golf, and cutting coupons. He loved a great deal!
Robert will be deeply missed by his family, friends, his four- legged companion of 18 years, Conner, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A Celebration Of Life will be held May 15th at 2PM at Lincoln Memorial, 11801 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086.
