Carl was born in Longbeach, CA, March 29, 1956, and grew up in southern California until he moved to Klamath Falls, OR as a young teenager. He graduated from Klamath Union High School, where he was on the wrestling team and played French horn in the band. After graduating high school, Carl worked many different jobs including as a timber feller for Weyerhauser. His interest in flying airplanes led him to a long career in aviation beginning with Steven's Aviation in Nashville, TN. After moving back to Klamath Falls, Carl was hired by Horizon Air where he eventually became an airline dispatcher, serving in that position for over thirty years.
Carl was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, shooting, and camping. His passions included music, motorcycles, firearms, telling stories, and history, including collecting historical paraphenelia. Carl inherited a love of cooking from his mother and grandmother, Lela "Mimi" Brenner, which he passed on to his children. One of his many pleasures included seeing his family at the dinner table and having his baked potato "just so". During barbeque season he was nicknamed "Patio-Dadio".
Some of his most frequent sayings were:
"Use enough butter"
"Here's the deal"
"Better have it and not need it, than need it and not have it"
"If you can't sleep, eat. If you can't eat, sleep"
"Mix me one"
And his favorite, "It'll feel better when it quits hurting".
