

Cotterell, Coral 94 Mar. 10, 1921 Mar. 21, 2015 Coral "C.W." William Cotterell, M.D., died March 21, 2015, in Portland. He was born March 10, 1921, in Salt Lake City, the son of Samuel W. and M. Angela (McCarthy) Cotterell and raised in southeastern Idaho. He enlisted the U.S. Navy in 1942 as a pharmacist's mate (hospital corpsman) and was stationed in Pearl Harbor and the Marshall Islands during WWII. After the war, he attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, where he met his future wife, Jean Harriet Schibel. They were married Aug. 16, 1947, in Portland. His wife became a nurse, and their growing family moved to Omaha, Neb., where he attended medical school at Creighton University, graduating in 1954. He worked as a general practitioner for several years and then as an obstetrician/gynecologist. Dr. Cotterell delivered over 4000 babies during his career and he was a staff physician at several local hospitals before retiring in 1989. He was an active member of several Portland area Catholic churches and charities. He liked to read and travel with his beloved wife. She passed away in 2012. He is survived by his children, Coral Jean of Longview, Wash., Karen (Sahlstrom) of Vancouver, Gregory of White Bear Lake, Minn., Louis of Longview and Mark of Middletown, Conn.; brother, Duane of Seattle; sister, Bonita (Fengler) of Bellevue, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A recitation of the rosary will be at 10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2015, at St. Therese Catholic Church, 1260 N.E. 132nd Ave., Portland. An interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council Office, P.O. Box 42157, Portland, OR 97242-0157.
