Dale Francis Helmer passed away at his home in Oregon City on January 31, surrounded by his wife and family. He was born on September 5, 1939 to Rita Delia Helmer in Toledo, Oregon. In 1957, Dale graduated from Franklin High School in Portland. During his senior year of High School, Dale joined the National Guard and after graduating, he enlisted in the Army. He honorably served his country for over 7 years. During his service, Dale was actively deployed in Korea and France, and earned a Good Conduct Medal, as well as a Sharpshooter Badge. After his honorable discharge, Dale began driving buses for TriMet. Fortuitously, his future wife Karen happened to be a regular rider on the number 9 route. A mutual friend facilitated their first date and in 1983 they were married at the historic German Methodist Church in Carver, Oregon. Karen and Dale spent many happy years, raising their family. Once Dale retired, they hit the road with their RV; travelling extensively around the Pacific Northwest. They were longtime members of the Layover Sam’s RV Club and enjoyed memorable trips to Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. In his spare time, Dale also enjoyed bowling, woodworking and eating out. He was an early bird and started each morning with a cup of coffee and an extensive review on the Oregonian’s sports page. Those who knew Dale will remember him for his friendly, out-going charm.
He was predeceased by his sister, Harriet, and his brother, Rusty. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children: David and Susan Helmer, Chris and Mitsuko Helmer, DuWayne and Fawn Archie, Teresa Archie and Dale and Lorinda Archie; 11 grandchildren as well as 7 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 6 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home. A funeral service with military honors will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 1pm at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery.
