Deborah was born in a small Canadian town, Sandy Lake, Manitoba. She grew up in a large farmhouse with nine brothers and sisters, without electricity or running water. Deborah left the farm at a young age with her sister, Janet, to Detroit MI. She worked in Detroit for several years, then moved west to California. In California, she met her first husband and together they opened a steak house. After several years, she moved to Portland, where she married Ralph Nordland and had their only child, David.
She divorced, then met the love of her life, Carl Shantz. Deborah and Carl married, and Carl adopted their son David. A devoted husband and a general contractor specializing in painting, Carl and Deborah managed the Lucretia Court in NW Portland for 36 years. Several years after Carl passed away, David returned from Thailand with his family – his wife Ying, and their new son, Morgan. Morgan soon became the light of Deborah’s eye, and she spoiled him as well as any Nana ever did.
People who met Deborah knew her for her compassion, understanding and love of her family. Her uncompromising morals guided Deborah in how she lived, and inspired others by her example. Admired and loved by many, Deborah was known to help people whenever possible. She put the well being of her family ahead of everything else. Her amazing and well renowned ability to share love through her exceptional cooking helped make anyone feel at home, as a friend or part of the family.
Deborah is loved by many. She will be missed dearly.
