Don Gene Ramey, age 85, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on September 15, 2025. He was born on June 20, 1940, in Portland to Joseph H. Ramey and Mary Louise Ramey, and remained deeply rooted in the city he proudly called home throughout his life.
Don served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965, where he attained the rank of Private First Class and served as a tank driver.
On May 28, 1983, he married the love of his life, Jean M. Ramey. Don and Jean first met in high school, and though life took them on separate paths, they reconnected years later with a deeper understanding and enduring love. Their bond was unwavering. Don was wholly devoted to Jean and often said she was the most beautiful woman in the world.
Throughout his working years, Don held a variety of roles that reflected his strength, skill, and dedication—from Nikolai Door and the Portland shipyards to his military service, and finally to a long career at Lynden Farms (later Foster Farms), where he remained until his retirement. He was known for his ability to fix just about anything and was the person family and friends turned to when something needed to be done right.
A member of the American Legion and a skilled sharpshooter, Don also had a wide range of interests. He was a passionate comic book collector, a fast car enthusiast, and a gifted craftsman who enjoyed small engine repair, woodworking, and hiking. He took pride in maintaining his home and yard and especially loved time spent in his workshop.
Don will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and deep love for his family. Above all, he loved his wife more than anything in the world. His devotion to Jean defined his life, and his greatest pride was in being by her side. As a good man, he respected, loved, and defended the women and girls of his family. He believed in being someone who protected and cherished those closest to him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean M. Ramey; stepdaughter Tammy M. Bishop; sons Thomas J. Blehm, Thomas Ramey, Ted Ramey, and Timothy Ramey; and grandchildren Aidan Ramey, Sam Blehm, Kirk E. Becker, and Gwen A. Bishop.
Don will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A funeral service honoring Don’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, located at 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, OR 97229. A graveside service will follow from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
