

Jean Thompson Ryan, 89, died October 14 in Portland.
She was born Edna Jean Thompson April 23, 1921, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and known as “Jean” to all who knew and loved her. Her parents were Scott and Mary Thompson, who preceded her in death. Jean earned a business degree at Oregon State College in 1943 and worked as office manager at Klamath Union High School, where she met Edward J. Ryan, who was a teacher and coach. The couple was married March 30, 1947, and moved to Portland the following year.
Jean was a homemaker after her children, Anne and Scott, were born. Her hobbies included gardening, hiking, and genealogy. After Ed’s retirement, they enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad.
She was a member of Crossroads Christian Church, where she volunteered at the food bank and participated in seniors’ activities. Jean served PTA president when her children were in school, and enjoyed helping others. She was known for her cheerful personality and hospitality, and as an advocate for nutrition and health.
Survivors include daughter Anne Ryan Bell and her husband Jim, of Aurora, CO; daughter-in-law Starla Ryan, of Camus, WA, five grandchildren, and nephew Charley Thompson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; brother, Wallace Thompson and wife Gretchen; nephew Roger Thompson; son, Scott, and grandson, Nathan.
A memorial service celebrating Jean’s life will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010, at Crossroads Church, in Portland. Contributions in her memory may be made to Crossroads Church, 2505 NE 102nd, Portland, 97220 or to the charity of one’s choice.
