Eugene "Gene" Martin Silver passed away unexpectedly on March 5, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. He was a kind and generous man who touched many people with his sense of humor and delighted in gifting a stamp, coin or sports card to everyone he met.
Gene was born on September 28,1949, in Washington DC to Miriam Kwiat and Jonas Silver. When he was 7 years old the family moved to Long Island, New York where he made many lifelong friends and became a loyal Yankees fan.
He graduated from SUNY Binghamton, obtained his MAT from Hofstra, and received a special education credential from Cal State LA. He was a dedicated special education teacher in Portland Public Schools for 30 years.
Gene was the devoted husband of 45 years to Jan Goodenough Silver, the loving father of Alissa and David Silver, and proud grandfather of Vance and Roslyn.
Gene shared his passions with his family and friends, including his staunch support of liberal causes and civil rights. His love of music began with sixties rock and roll and continued with an ongoing playlist exploring all genres and artists.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; daughter Alissa Silver (Zack Mazer); son David Silver (Autumn); grandchildren Vance and Roslyn; sisters Leta Elioseff and Suzanne Silver (Michael Swartz); sisters-in-law Linda Monescalchi and Nancy Wickman (John); and many loving cousins, nephews and nieces.
Raise a glass with a good craft beer and honor Gene with his favorite toast "To Family, Friends and Fun." A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date.
