With great sorrow, the Massey family announces the passing of our funny, sweet and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Frank “Chico” Loren Massey. Frank passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Born on May 19, 1946 to George B Massey, Jr. and Louise (Atherton) Massey in Highland Park, Illinois. Frank spent his youth in Central and South America, where his father worked for the US State Department after World War II. As a family, they moved back to the Chicago area when he was 6 and ready to enter school. Transitioning from Spanish to English at a young age was difficult but he excelled at both, and loved practicing his Spanish in later years.
Growing up, he loved working in “The Village Toy Store”, his parent’s store in Winnetka, Illinois. He helped them stock, wrap and display toys. He graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois in 1964, he went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from Denison University in Granville, Ohio and later a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In between college and graduate school, he served honorably in Vietnam from 1968-1970 with the US Army.
After graduate school, he moved to Minneapolis where he met and married Kathleen (Underhill) Massey in Bloomington, Minnesota in 1973. Frank and Kathie were married for 51 years and had two children Tom (1976) and Emily (1978).
Professionally, Frank spent nearly 40 years in various senior leadership roles across the sales and marketing domains offering his many talents to key brands in the housewares and commercial agriculture industries.
After retiring in the early 2000s, Frank and his wife followed their children back west to Portland (2005) where he lived the last 19 years of his life.
Frank loved all sports and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved life, was known for his sense of humor, cared deeply about his family, and was an extraordinary father.
Frank was preceded in death by his father George B. Massey, Jr, his mother Louise A. Massey, brothers John Massey and George B. Massey III, sisters-in-law Barbara J Sullins and Nancy J Sedor and brother-in-law Harry Sullins.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Kathie, children Thomas (Missy) Massey and Emily (Sam) Leach, grandchildren Ashden Mace, Penelope Leach, Wakefield Leach, Beatrice Leach; sisters-in-law Anne Massey (widow of George B. Massey III) and Sonia Massey (widow of John Massey), brothers-in-law Mike Sedor (husband of Nancy J Sedor), and Art (Shelley) Underhill and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Portland based Veterans organization Fort Kennedy (fortkennedy.org) 7600 SE Johnson Creek Boulevard, Portland, OR 97206.
