Frieda Eisal was the sixth of eight children born to George Eisal and Mary Katherine Hamburg. Both of their German ancestors had migrated to Russia in 1766. In 1912 her parents moved to America, settling in Portland, OR where Frieda was born and lived all her life. The family attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sellwood and the children went to the church school until 1927 when it closed. It was during this time that Frieda learned about God’s love and decided to follow Jesus. After her eighth grade graduation from Harmony Point School in Clackamas, she worked as a live-in housekeeper.
Frieda married John Green February 16, 1935. They became the parents of a daughter, Joanne Frieda and a son, Gary John. Mom always thought of herself as a housewife, but in addition to that position, she worked part time at many jobs. During WWII Mom worked the night shift at the Kaiser Shipyard on Swan Island and Daddy worked the day shift at Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver. When we were young teens, Mom worked for a farmer as a platoon leader/row boss. It was here we learned how to work and to budget the money we earned. She continued cleaning houses for neighbors and friends. Dad and Mom worked as janitors at our church for many years.
In 1965, she began working full time at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital. After a few years, she attended evening classes at Washington High School to receive her GED Diploma and was promoted to Assistant Executive Housekeeper. She worked at the hospital for 20 Years until the hospital closed. John Green, her husband of 41 years, died March 31, 1976. Mom was a widow for 12 years and then married Jacob Hagelganz whose wife Julia had passed away. The Green and Hagelganz families were friends having attended the same church for many years. Now Frieda had a step-son and many more grandchildren.
Jacob and Frieda enjoyed many trips to visit the families in California. Jacob died October 25, 1998 after 10 years of marriage. Mom lived alone until she moved into Summerplace Assisted Living Facility in 2005 as the result of a broken hip. On Jan 12, 2014 she broke the same hip. However, we were able to celebrate her 96th birthday together on Jan 18.
Frieda was preceded by all her siblings and both her husbands. She will be remembered by daughter Joanne (Green) Krieger, son Gary Green and step-son Dr. James W. Hagelganz; 7 grandchildren; 6 step grand- children; 11 gr.grandchildren; 7 step-gr.grandchildren; 3 gr.gr.grandchildren; 2 step-gr.gr.grandchildren; 5 nieces and 6 nephews.
