George Frederick Ulloa, age 81, died on January 25, 2019, in Portland, Oregon. George was born in 1937 to Manuel and Maria Ulloa in Guam. He is survived by his wife Renee; son Robert “Bob”, and daughters Joanne Thomas and Julie Michaelis; grandchildren, Austin and Quintin Ulloa, Jaden and Kaitlyn Michaelis, and Ryan and Tyler Thomas; daughter-in law Cindy, and son-in-laws Hugh and Matthew.
George and his family lived in Guam during World War II and survived Japanese occupation. George graduated from Far Eastern Mission Academy in 1955. He then attended Walla Walla College, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Theology in 1960. He then served in the Army with the White Coats from 1960 to 1962. George became the Director of Food Services for the FAA and NASA from 1963 to 1967. He married Renate “Renee” Zaft in 1965. Hearing God’s call, George attended Andrews University and graduated with a Masters of Divinity in 1969. He served as a minister from 1969 to 1988; serving in Wrangle and St. Petersburg, Alaska; then in Oregon including Veneta, Junction City, Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Cottage Grove, Lincoln City, Nestucca, Sheridan, and Grand Ronde. During this time they raised their three children. Christian education was also important to George. While in Lincoln City, he helped expand the school from K-8 to K-10 and started a school in Grand Ronde. George also worked to bring other Christian churches together. In 1988, George transferred to the Trust Department of the Oregon Conference and worked there until he retired in 2004. He began serving as a chaplain in 1990 until 2014. Every summer, he would spend two weeks at Oregon Camp Grounds working with Locations for the annual Camp Meeting. George served as Director of Camp Meeting from 1990 until 2011.
George was a person dedicated to serving God with his whole life. Jesus was a personal friend that he wanted to share with others. He loved to work in his garden and yard. George loved to sing with some of his favorite groups being Kings Heralds, Del Delker, Ray Turner, and the Heritage Singers.
George will be missed by his family and friends, but his legacy will live on through us. We know we will see him again when Jesus comes to take us to our permanent home. As George would say, “Until we meet again.”
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face shine upon you,
and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you,
and give you peace.
Both now and forever more.
Amen.
A memorial service celebrating George’s life will be held at Meadow Glade SDA Church in Battle Ground, WA on March 2, 2019, at 3 pm.
