Jerry grew up in Hood River, Oregon before going to live and work on a ranch in Dufur, Oregon at age 14. From there, he worked in various places before enlisting in the USMC in 1959, serving honorably before his discharge in 1963. After retiring from Holman, he drove truck and also enjoyed working on cars and teaching others to work on their own. He worked for Budget transporting vehicles from one place to another for many years, and in general just loved being on the open road.
Other interests included softball, which included leagues playing with his son and daughter-in-law, bowling, hiking and being in the outdoors. Although he didn’t ride the rafts, he would go on rafting trips with his family and volunteered to be the shuttle between the starting and ending points on the river. Jerry always enjoyed meeting new people and learning their stories, and his family recall joining him on errands that turned into half-days out because he couldn’t help but start conversations with ‘friends he had just met.’ He always had dogs, including one called Heidi that went on many truck driving trips with him, and was always open to having friends and family drive with him.
Jerry married his wife Penny on August 12, 1977, and she preceded him in death in 2018.
He is survived by his children Debbi, Jani, Jerry, Shelly, Angie, and Lindy, and by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life for Gerald will be held Thursday, May 1, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt Scott Blvd., Portland, Oregon. Following the celebration of life, a committal service with honors will take place at 11:30 AM at Willamette National Cemetery after a short vehicle procession.
