Al was born in Seattle, Washington to parents Herman and Allie Gantenbein. He was married to Lola Myers for almost 60 years. Together they raised 3 daughters.
Al started in the grocery business at age 14 and continued for 37 years in that line of work. Later he worked for 10 years as a commercial real estate broker selling grocery stores.
He was a life-long church member and enjoyed directing choirs, teaching Sunday school and assisting in other church ministries. He participated in YMCA programs all his life. His many interests & hobbies included cake decorating, wood working, upholstering, singing, model railroading, travelling and entertaining family and friends.
He served as an ombudsman for the state of Oregon inspecting local foster homes and was a tutor in both the HOSTS and SMART programs. He also volunteered at Cannon Beach Conference Center.
He is survived by his daughters Judith Floyd, Sue Osborne, & Sandra Snider. He had 9 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 15th at Gateway Baptist Church, 13300 N.E. San Rafael Portland, OR 97230-3123.
