Harlen grew up on the family farm, where he learned the values of hard work and responsibility while tending to the cattle, horses, chickens and fields of hay. Those early lessons shaped the steadfast, dependable man he would become.
As a young adult, Harlen enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Joint Base Lewis–McChord in Washington, where he served proudly. During this time, he continued his long courtship with Janice Rau, whom he had met during his teen years back home. While on leave, Harlen asked Janice to marry him, and together they eloped to Washington — beginning a fulfilling 59-year journey side by side.
Harlen and Janice built their life and raised their family in the Pacific Northwest. Harlen was a devoted father to three sons: Harlen Jr., Terry, and Daniel. After leaving the Army, the couple settled in Portland, Oregon, where Harlen worked tirelessly to support his growing family. He held roles in various fields but spent most of his career in corrugated cardboard manufacturing and truck driving. He retired in 2005 from Gresham Transfer Trucking Company after nearly 20 years of dedicated service.
In retirement, Harlen devoted himself to caring for Janice and discovering new hobbies that kept his hands busy and his spirit engaged. Even learning and finding joy in cooking, of course supervised by his wife. He remained grounded by the same values that defined his entire life — loyalty, humility, perseverance, and love for his family.
Harlen will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, and the deep faith he had in Christ. His legacy lives on in the family he built, the values he instilled, and the countless memories shared by those who knew him.
Harlen is predeceased by his parents Henry and Evelyn, and his beloved wife Janice. Harlen leaves behind his sons Harlen Jr (Portland, OR) Terry (Natasha) (Portland, OR), Daniel (Carlton, OR), his sisters Evonne (Jim) Bentley (Warrenton, OR), Esther (Gene) Wilson (Warrenton, OR), brother Howard (Becky) Rude (Wisconsin), his grandsons Nehemiah and Elijah Rude (Portland, OR) and numerous relatives.
Harlen will be laid to rest at Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
