On January 27, 1942, Harold enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as an aviation machinists mate 1st class. After WWII, Harold worked as an optician for several local optical companies before becoming a longshoreman. He retired as an active member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.
Harold was one of the early Oaks Park skaters.
He is survived by his wife, Aliene Bell, step-daughter, Vickie Scott; two grandsons, Mark and Mike Kidwiber; niece, Janice Bell; nephew, Wayne Bell; two stepsons, James and Donald Carter; another step daughter, Deborah Johnson; and lots of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Harold was an avid fisherman and enjoyed traveling with his wife. Harold was preceded in death by his brother, Ben Bell.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm, Monday, June 14, 2010 in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
