Elena Radu was born on March 13, 1938, to Anghelache and Mandita Radu in Galati, Romania. When she was six, her family moved to Bucharest where Elena, often called Pusa, grew up under the grip of communism. She became a chemist in a pharmaceutical factory, and married Vasile Rascol, a photographer for the Agricultural Ministry. Elena and Vasile were married on July 7, 1963, and together they dedicated their lives to serving the Lord. The Lord blessed them with 2 children, Dorian and Christiana.
Service to the Lord meant serving His people. Elena loved ministering to children. She would lead them in singing and reciting poetry and was also a great story teller. Many children gathered in her home to learn about God’s word through her stories, poetry and singing. One of the most significant ways they served the Lord was by distributing Bibles throughout the country. Various missions from the west would smuggle the Bibles into the country and Vasile and Elena would receive them in secret and then distribute them to those who didn’t have any. This ministry lasted over 10 years until Vasile was caught by the secret police and arrested. This period of time that was both terrifying and full of distress was also a time that God fortified her faith and taught her to completely dependent upon the Lord and His Word. Elena loved the word of God. One of her unique gifts was that of counseling and encouraging others. She had so much wisdom which didn’t originate from her own mind or experience, but from the rich and powerful Word of God.
Throughout her life, she encountered many miracles of God’s power, provision, and healing. She witnessed supernatural provision and she encountered angels that helped and encouraged her in some of the most difficult seasons. She personally experienced the healing power of God not only within herself but also within her family.
Elena loved her family. She was no stranger to and sacrifice and made sure they always had everything we needed and more. She listened and strengthened them with words of faith and courage. Elena also had such a wonderful sense of humor which helped lighten the intensity of difficult circumstances. She took every situation and faithfully let the Holy Spirit to lead her through.
In 1977, she moved to the United States with her family where after becoming a citizen changed her name to Helen Rady. When she was single, she had dreamed that she would marry someone who loved the Lord and take her to travel to foreign countries. The Lord honored the desires of her heart. Although she was now in a free country, she did not live a life of indulgence but continued to help Christians in Romania. Their home continued to be a place of generosity and hospitality. No one would ever leave without feeling the presence of the Lord and being well fed. Her desserts and pastries were some of the best.
While in the US, she worked as a chemist and raised her children to love the Lord. Elena and Vasile celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary last summer. The time came for the Lord to call her home after a short season of illness. Even throughout her sickness, God strengthened her to be faithful until the end. She went to her heavenly home on November 18, 2021. She will be missed so much but know that we will see her again soon in eternity.
Elena was survived by her husband, Vasile, her son, Dorian and daughter, Christiana. Her grandchildren are Landon, Aaron and wife Leah with great granddaughter Florence, Lauren, Selah, Emma, Judah and Bria.
