Born and raised in Superior, Wis., Herb enlisted in the Navy after graduation from high school and served during World War II. After the war, he pursued an interest in forestry, ultimately moving to Oregon and graduating from the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. In his final year of college, he was joined in Oregon by the love of his life and high school classmate Beth McGauley. They were married on Oct. 18, 1950, in Portland. In a loving 62-year marriage, Herb and Beth were blessed with five sons and one daughter.
Herb's forestry career of more than 30 years was spent primarily with the Bureau of Land Management, where he rose from technical in-the-woods positions to BLM's Chief of the Division of Resources managing all of the agency's forestlands in western Oregon. Herb was a wonderful husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was an outdoorsman leading family hikes, camping and fishing trips and incredible woodworker making furniture and beautiful wood turnings, all with a wry sense of humor. For over 50 years, Herb and Beth were devoted to All Saints Parish where Herb served in multiple leadership positions. After moving to Willamette View in 2007, Herb spent over a decade delivering communion to its Catholic residents in a weekly service that he organized and presided over.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Beth; and son, Jeffrey. He is survived by five children, Michael (Melissa) of Portland, Peter (Brian) of Azeitão, Portugal, Janet Rathbone (Scott) of Bend, David (Cindy) of Clackamas and Thomas (Elizabeth) of Galt, California; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
