

Herbert Daniel Miller 86, Passed away January 25, 2018, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho, with his daughter Becky by his side. He went willingly into the loving arms of his Savior.
He was born September 11, 1931, to Herbert Paul Miller and Vienna Adeline (Blake) Miller, in Miles City, Montana. The family lived on a homestead farm outside of Miles City. He always said his mama could make a feast for the family with some flour and a prairie chicken. In following years they moved to Butte, then to Post Falls, and then lastly to Portland during WWII, as his dad found work in the shipyards for the war effort.
Herbs first job was a paper route, and with his earnings he bought bicycles for his sisters and brother. He was a good Son and a very hard worker.
Herb attended Washington and Parkrose High School, where he played the trumpet in the marching band. He became a talented welder while working for Wagner Mining Equipment, and later at W. G. Rovang.
Herb joined the Navy Reserves in 1950, and shortly after, the Korean War began and he was activated into service. He worked as an electrician's mate on the Osprey minesweeper.
He married Joan Benge in 1952, and had his first son, Terry, the following year. This marriage ended in divorce, and soon after rejoined the Navy in 1954.
While stationed in California on leave, he met the love of his life. He married Jacqueline Jardine on June 21, 1958, in Carson City, Nevada. They made Portland their home and raised their children in the Damascus area.
In 1959 Herb made his career as a Police Officer serving the city of Portland. For the next 25 years he worked in various assignments within the department; including, patrol officer, motorcycle traffic officer and sergeant, detective and detective sergeant. He retired in 1984.
Herb’s family was the most important to him. They took many vacations over the years together, traveling to Canada, down to California, camping in the red woods, dirt bike riding the sand dunes at Sand Lake, as well as enjoying leisurely fishing trips, or exploring the World Fair in Spokane, WA. Many happy memories were made in their camper over the years.
After Retirement, He and Jackie would spend their winters in Yuma, Arizona. There they took up square dancing, rock hunting, excursions to Mexico and sight seeing. He and Jackie loved to travel, some of the places they enjoyed were, China, New Zealand, Australia and cruising the Caribbean to Jamaica, the Grand Caymans and Cozumel Mexico to visit the Mayan ruins.
He continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring.

Funeral Services are at 11:00 a.m. Friday February 9, 2018, with the viewing from 10 to 10:45 a.m.
