Hugh Duffey Brown, born on September 11, 1944, in Cassopolis, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on February 26, 2025, at the age of 80. He was the first-born son of Robert E. and Lovene E. Brown.
From a young age, Hugh was known for his adventurous spirit, always opting for the exciting path over the safe one. Even as a child, when neighborhood bullies came around, Hugh met them head-on and triumphed. This boldness carried through his high school years, where he excelled in football and wrestling. He drove a 1935 Model A Ford to school, often making his own repairs on the vehicle.
After earning his bachelor’s degrees in Education and Social Science from Oregon State University in 1966, Hugh taught middle school for a year before serving a brief stint in the Oregon Air National Guard. He then went on to work a variety of jobs, eventually settling in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he worked for many years at a playground equipment factory.
Hugh was a kind, spiritual man who lived with compassion. He loved to take long walks, often for miles, and enjoyed quiet moments of reflection. He was also a gentleman who cherished spending time with family and friends, particularly enjoying watching football at Wanda’s house, listening to music, and drinking hot spiced cider on chilly nights.
After the passing of his father, Robert, Hugh returned to Portland, Oregon, inheriting his father’s home, where he spent the final 13 years of his life. Despite a decline in health following his 80th birthday, Hugh was cared for lovingly by his son, Marcellus, and his wife, Joy, after being hospitalized just before Christmas with lung cancer.
Hugh is survived by his son, Marcellus, and his wife, Joy; three grandchildren, Aikasia, Ajaiye, and Asir; and his brothers, Scott and Mark. He is also deeply mourned by many friends, especially Wanda, whose care and kindness meant so much to him.
May Hugh now rest in peace with our Lord.
