Janet was born in Hays, Kansas in 1918 to Peter and Esther (Fietz) Scymanski. When Janet turned 13, she, her parents, and her five siblings (She being the eldest), packed up their worldly possessions and drove west in a Whippet automobile complete with a rabbit cage tied on front. The family settled in Silverton, Oregon.
In Silverton, Peter started a hop farming business and Janet worked on the farm until her high school graduation in 1937 from Silverton High School, where she was voted "most winsome".
Upon graduation, Janet traveled to Portland, where she worked for several families as a nanny. One Saturday night while roller skating at Oaks Park with her girlfriend, Marge, Janet met Amos Rich of Orenco, Oregon. Janet and her friend Marge agreed to meet Amos and his friend Ray the following week to skate with them at the Imperial Skate Rink.
Janet and Marge decided they would go to the Oaks and skate instead. The boys, undaunted, went looking for them and found them. The rest is history, Janet and Amos Rich were married in 1941 in Camas, Washington by Reverend Poor. (Ray and Marge also married!)
Janet and Amos moved to Beaverton, where they ran a gas station and small store. By day, Amos worked at the family nursery business.
On June 6, 1946, Janet gave birth to a son Dennis Charles Rich. Soon after the family built a home and moved to Hillsboro, where they eventually began their own nursery business, Amos Rich Nurseries.
Once again, on June 6th in 1961 Janet gave birth to her second child, Christie Ann Rich.
Janet and Amos were hard workers and worked together in their successful nursery business until Amos passed away on November 21, 2004.
Janet is survived by her sisters, Mary Davis and Betty Nabonne, sons Dennis Rich, daughter Christie Theeler, son-in-law Todd Theeler. Grandchildren, Scott, Keli, Lindsy & Felicia Rich. Kelsey & Spencer Smith, along with one great grand-daughter, Maddie.
Services will be held at the Rich's lifelong church, Bethany Baptist, located at 4545 NW Kaiser Rd, Portland on Friday, June 1st at 2:00 P.M.
