She attended several elementary schools and George Dewey High School in Subic Bay, Philippines. While in the Philippines, her mother started the first Job’s (pronounced Jobe’s) Daughters Bethel. Jay become a Job’s Daughter Honored Queen later in Alameda, California and graduated from Alameda High School in 1959. In 1963, Jay earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Pacific University and a Master’s Degree in Education in 1970 from Oregon State University. She taught in Forest Grove, Portland and Madras, Oregon and at Parkrose with 30 of her 32 years teaching remedial reading.
In 1971, Jay married Robert “Bob” Wesley Hosman and gained four step children, Burdae, Kelly, Tristan and Mary Ann. Bob passed away in January 1990. In July 1993, Jay married Daryl Leon Nehler and gained two more step children, Mark and Denise.
Daryl and Jay enjoyed traveling, gardening and family. Jay’s special interests included her rose garden, and showing her roses at the Oregon Rose Society competitions during Rose Festival, winning several blue ribbons. She also enjoyed researching genealogy. She became a member of the Genealogical Forum of Oregon and took several trips to Salt Lake City with the National Genealogy Society. Jay also enjoyed her membership in Parkrose “Middle Sister” book club which started in 1995 and continued for many years.
Jay was pre-deceased by her parents, brothers William Steveley and Derek Steveley, her first and second husbands, and step-son Tristan Hosman. She is survived by her step children Burdae Irwin, Kelly Wiley (Gar), Mary Ann Hughes (Neal), Mark Nehler (Sydney) and Denise Martin (Steve), seven grandchildren, and eight great grand-children.
